_the Challenge
To shoot 8 distincively different poetry films in 4 days. To create poetry films which explore colonial history and can be viewed both artistically and for educational purposes. Three prestigious funders, (yet) extreme budget and logistics limitations, 8 poets, smallest creative team, the tiniest of crews, and zero willingness to sacrifice production value nor quality.
_the Solution
Laila's incredibly smart poem structure sees her sarcastically yet tastefully take multiple voices of slavery perpetrators - slave owners, plantations lords. She (as them) speaks to them, hidden behind stack of tea crates, witnessed by the silent elite.
Historical tea caddy being a majestic centrepiece is glorified beyond the human life or dignity, which is echoed by the carefully curated framing of the room. A room fully of riches, yet centrally positioned mirror shows not much other than dark void - a truthful representation of elites responsible for slavery atrocities. Lavinshingly rich, yet dark and empty of humanity inside.
